If you encounter a pop-up on your computer that tells you to call a phone number to fix, cleanup, remove a virus, etc. it is a Scam!

This also includes phone calls from supposed companies like ‘Microsoft’, ‘Norton’, or ‘McAfee’, etc. These are also scams. Sorry to let you know, but the real Microsoft, Norton, McAfee, etc. will Never call you to let you know your system is infected with a virus or needs cleaning up.

Solution:

For phone calls, simply hang up and definitely Do Not let them have remote access to your computer – this is when they really Scam you, telling you your system is ‘full of viruses’, or has ‘many errors’.

For pop-ups, try pressing ‘Alt-F4’ on your keyboard to close the malicious pop-up (which most of the time does not have an ‘X’ in the upper right corner to close it. If that keypress doesn’t close it – simply force turn off your computer by holding in the physical power button for 5 seconds. At that point, turn your computer back on and you should be good to go.

If none of the above works, give P.C. 911 a call and we can sort things out for you.

    Hi Michael,
Phyllis Wetsel here. Glad I happened to come across your blog! Already finding it helpful. I’m going to get a tablet in November and eventually hope to be “free” from my desktop. I guess I may need a laptop…is that what they’re still calling those? ๐ŸŒ
